Under the Income Tax Act (Cap 470) and the Tax Procedures Act 2015, a company's obligations are anchored to its accounting year-end:
Running in parallel are the recurring monthly taxes. PAYE, NSSF, SHIF and the Housing Levy are remitted by the 9th of the following month, while VAT, turnover tax, withholding tax and SEP/digital tax are filed by the 20th. Individuals file their annual return by 30 June. Estimate your liability first with the PAYE & net-pay calculator.
A company's annual income tax return is due by the last day of the 6th month after the accounting year-end. For a 31 December year-end that is 30 June. Individuals also file their income tax return by 30 June following the year of income.
The balance of tax (self-assessment tax less instalments already paid) is due within 4 months of the accounting year-end. For a 31 December year-end that is 30 April โ two months before the return itself is filed.
Instalment tax is paid on the 20th day of the 4th, 6th, 9th and 12th months of the financial year. For a 31 December year-end that means 20 April, 20 June, 20 September and 20 December. Each instalment is based on the lower of 110% of the prior year's tax or a current-year estimate.
Employers deduct PAYE and remit it โ together with NSSF, SHIF and the Affordable Housing Levy โ through iTax by the 9th of the month following the payroll month.
VAT (the VAT3 return), turnover tax, withholding tax and the SEP/digital tax are all due by the 20th of the month following the tax period. Filing and payment are made on iTax.
Individuals file their annual income tax return by 30 June following the year of income (the calendar year to 31 December). Filing on iTax is required even for nil returns to stay tax-compliant.
